All Plans Go Awry With The Party of CHAOS!
Continuing
Adventures of the Lords (and Ladies) of Chaos. Since Hunter is also
relatively new to the group he doesn't have a high level character, so he is
allowed to make Vivianne, a magic-user.
From
my left:
Nilo playing Noohien/ED the half-orc thief,
Zack playing Trinidon the elven magic-user
Chris playing Lucius the human holy warrior (OF CHAOS!!!)

Having
found a guide named Mara in the household slave quarters, the party
has found their way to the "civilized" section of Slavers
Bay and has arranged to have a bunkroom for the night. As the party
tries to figure out their best plan of action, Mara offers up that
there is another magic-user whose group ended up on the bad side of
the slavers and was almost completely wiped out with only the
magic-user surviving. The party is willing to see about the new
magic-user, and Mara goes looking for and finds the magic-user and
brings Vivianne to the room. After a bit of nerves at first meeting,
they agree to ally. Vivianne provides them with some information
about the orc encampment next to the town, and with the aid of
invisibility and fly spells Nova goes to check it out.
Nova's quick fly through the encampment leads to the discovery of some valuable information. He actually sees a shield that looks almost identical to the one Lucius used to have, long ago, being worn by a cleric in the temple of Gruumsh. Nova also scouted out the layout of the place and identified various buildings in it, including a second temple with a altarpiece that was shaped like a black eye with a silver slitted pupil. And, as Nova looked in, he heard a hissing voice from the altar area whisper "invisibility...". The clerics started looking around, and Nova quickly took his leave!
Back at the bunkroom, Nova told what he had seen. ED blanched slightly at this and told the party of the cult of the Eye of Night. The cult was something ED was familiar with from his childhood, and though he didn't know much about it he was able to give the group more information. ED also knew that it was worshiped by orcs, orogs, ogres and some snaky-human race that some of the others knew as yuan-ti.
So the group began to plan on how best to reclaim the items that they had lost from the orcs. Several plans to try to assault the orc stronghold and destroy all within were considered and abandoned, as the orc numbers were in the multiple hundreds easily. At some point during the planning Trainfield felt an uneasiness, as if he was being watched for a moment, but it passed. A discussion started about that and it was rapidly decided that the temple to the Eye of Night needed to be seriously destroyed. In the end it was decided to hit both temples hard and fast and to try to destroy them both in one fell swoop, and regain the stolen property of course!
Then Vivianne spoke up again... There was this magic-user named Ivan the White who had taken a spellbook from her. She had a secondary one, but the one he had was special. Ivan was one of the higher ups in Slavers Bay, and she wanted this spellbook back! So, suddenly, plans changed.
A stealth-in-force was planned on the slavers in-town headquarters with Nova, Ed, and Vivianne sent in with every possible protective spell to keep them safe. Their plan was to look for the spellbook, acquire it stealthily, and make their escape. Easy peasy. The guards at the front door were easy enough to lure away with the noise made as a gold coin hit the steps, and the invisible trio moved into the house unnoticed. Inside they found a hallway straight ahead with a door on either side partway down and a staircase at the far end. Nova carefully opened the door on the left, which caused some exclamations of surprise from within. As the occupants of the room came to check the door, the trio moved down towards the staircase. Someone stepped out and looked around but, seeing no one, they muttered and returned to the room.
Having decided that what they were seeking was likely on a higher floor, the trio moved upwards where they found an intersection at the top of the stairs: one hallway to the right with a door in its left wall at the end, another to the left with a door in the right wall near the end, and a third hallway straight ahead with two doors, one on each side, halfway down the hall. Going straight ahead the trio moved stealthily down the hall until Vivianne found a tripwire with her ankle, which rang bell in each of the rooms in this hallway. Nova listened to the door on the left and heard some noises that sounded like someone fumbling with things, and then he listened at the door to the right where he heard faint muttering. Standing to the side, he opened the left hand door, and as he did so a heavy crossbow bolt flew past him and embedded itself in the far wall. As the half armored man within began to crank the windlass to cock the crossbow again, ED stealthily moved in and coshed him hard, knocking him out cold. ED came back out, removed the bolt from the wall, and tossed it back in the room before closing the door. Then they turned to the right hand door.
Nova popped open this door and when the releasing the catch drew no actions from within, he opened it wider. In spite of what he had heard, there seemed to be no one inside at all. Nova held up his gem of seeing just in time to see the invisible magic-user on the other side of the room casting a spell. Nova threw his magical returning dagger at the mage and hit him, but not hard enough to disrupt his spell as a lightning bolt flashed across the room, blasting through the wooden walls and into the room behind the trio. Vivianne dodged and Nova ducked, but ED was a bit too slow on the uptake and was blasted into unconsciousness, collapsing limp where he had been standing. Vivianne was not in much better shape as the blast had knocked her back and almost knocked her out, but she stood fast and was still game. Nova had been scorched, but he had taken worse, so he was ready to fight on.
The party outside couldn't really hear the muffled blast, but Lucius and Trainfield saw the flash of light through the barred and shuttered windows and believed it boded ill for the secrecy. That and the two door guards jumping suddenly then running inside gave the entire outside group the idea that there were problems inside and that their allies were likely in trouble. Rushing inside they met a guard and a heavily armored man of fierce aspect just coming into the hall from the side rooms. Battle was joined!
Trinidon dropped a haste spell on the party and things began moving even faster. Lucius ran up into combat and badly hurt the guard before taking a swing at the fighter. Parva moved in and dropped the guard and stepped past turning to face the fighter. Trainfield holy blessed the group and then it was the enemy's turn. The fighter took two swings at Lucius and hit him, and the thief that had been in the room behind the guard quietly stepped out and coshed the druid into an unconscious heap on the floor.
Battles raged both on the ground floor and on the higher floor. Trinidon flew over the heads of the downstairs combatants and came up to the second floor where spells still flashed and splashed back and forth, though to little result. Trinidon tried to charm the enemy mage as Vivianne grabbed ED's sprawled form and began to drag him back down the hall away from the combat. Having had enough of the exchange, and having had all he wanted of the halfling's icy dagger, Ivan the White cast a dimension door and departed the building.
Downstairs the battle was all about force and little of spells. Trainfield moved up to take the attack to the thief and hurt him badly while Lucius spent the last charge from his magical amulet of quick kills to kill the fighter. The thief, showing his chaotic and evil nature, chose not to swing at the heavily armored fighter, instead stabbing his poisoned dagger into the fallen form of the druid. Then with a "Be seeing you." to the dwarf, the thief vanished. The druid's body began to spasm from the damaging effects of the poison, and Trainfield, rather than waste effort trying to hit an invisible target, moved to help Lucius kill the remaining guard and the other fighter.
As the combat ended Parva awoke in agony as the poison ravaged her nervous system, but Trainfield cast remove poison to end the agony. Vivianne came downstairs with ED's limp form, and the dwarven cleric soon had him back on his feet.
With crowds of potential hostiles gathering outside, Trinidon used two wall of ice spells to seal off the front and back entrances to the house while the party scavenged loot and looked for other ways out. Trapdoors to the roof seemed to provide the only other good option, and with Parva casting hallucinatory forest to create a straight line of relative if obviously not real cover, the party rescued the five slaves that worked in the leaders' house and with a fly spell on every party member and with everyone but Parva carrying a now-freed slave (so Parva could cast her spells), the party fled to the top of the steep and high bluff that overlooked the basic where Slavers Bay was. With Trainfield staying behind to guard and protect the freed slaves, the rest of the party flew back in to rescue Mara and the seven other slaves she trusted. Once the group was all gathered together again on the top of the bluff, they settled down to rest for the remainder of the night while those on watch kept a sharp eye on the town.
In the early morning light Nova was on third watch and keeping his spyglass trained on the town. It seemed that there were large and heavily armed patrols of orcs gathering to go out searching for the group. With Trinidon's spell points replenished, he used the Hemlock's Homing spell to transport the freed slaves and the party to the fortress, though it took three trips. With the clerics at the Fortress helping the ex-slaves and the party in a peaceful place again, the night's adventure ended.
